well it’s another full moon ‘n’ the halibut left this boulevard
of broken kelp bed dreams...oh-hum...wot to do???
the idiot crew members in my head chime in “hey, don’t you
remember the last time there was a full moon and no halibeasts?”
oh yeah!!! the kelp bastards were in a lunatic frenzy!!!
so...i paddled out at first light...excited there was no fog...got
my bearings...made a leisurely paddle to the outer reefs...
didn’t bother lookin’ fer bait...whipped out my heavy-er plastics rod...
cracked open some nectar of the gods ‘n’ hunted fer kelp bastards...
it was a freak show from the first drop!!! wammo!!! they were hittin’
that scampy at riffling speed!!! even if there were gigantic halibeasts
below me...i would never have known it...there was no way
to even get to the bottom!!! i had to knock back a cold one to settle my nerves!!!
some hits were so hard...me ‘n’ the idiot crew members in my head
couldn’t believe they were calicos!!! these guyz were linebackers!!!
pound fer pound...a decent size kelp bastard fights harder than almost
all other fish...there were some brutes that were unstoppable...driving
into the reefs ‘n’ cuttin’ me off before i could say “cheeze 'n' crackers! wot the flack!”
didn’t matter how i fished...droppin straight down...castin’ ‘n’ sinkin’...
retrieving...suspending...jiggin’...anywhere in the water column...
it was one of the best bites i can ever remember...these swine rat bastards
were crazy...loadin' my 20/40 lb. rod bendo!!! draggin' my tip under water from
bow to stern...zig-zaggin'...pumpin'...jerkin'...it was unbelievable!!!
when it was all drank-n-done...they destroyed a dozen of my
plastic scampys...no wonder the record for kelp bass is only 14 pounds...
who could even stop a 20 pound kelp bastard???
spear fishin' / skin divin' since 1971 i've seen some real brutes...they don't
even look like bass when they get that big...their bodies look like torpedoes...
wot a fish...wot an adventure...i wouldn't trade yak fishin' for all the tea in china!!!
cheers!!!

Agree. They usually bite best when they are in the spawning mode.philharris wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 10:02 amthe spawning colors are usually in spring 'n' early summer...JohnMckroid wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 6:36 pm Usually when they are biting that good, they got the orange cheeks, but I don't see that in your photos.
