SIERRA EARLY FALL 2025

Post by philharris »

stinky hasn’t been able to go to the sierras these last
few years do to being hospitalized…she’s had
cerebrospinal fluid leaks due to tears in the dura
matter…one leak was so severe it caused her brain
to sag n hemorrhage… :( :( :(

multiple surgeries later…she’s in good shape “n”
back to work thank god…neither of us were able to
go last year…but with no vacation time for her…i had
to go solo this year…

since rules changed for 5 bridges on the lower owens
river to barbless hooks only…i decided to stay in
mammoth instead of bishop…it’s only 10 minutes
away from convict lake “n” the upper owens river
(which is right across the road from convict feeding
lake Crowley)…

my favorite places in bishop are 5 bridges lower owens
river…bishop creek (south ‘n ‘ middle fork)…last
but not least…south lake…

in mammoth my favorite spots are rock creek lake
(rock creek as it goes up “little lakes valley”)…
upper owens river “n” convict lake…it’s crazy to
realize i’ve been going up there for 60 years now…

spent 3 days “n” 2 nights…bouncing off the upper
owens “n” convict…weather was 65 degrees with
little to no wind…only thursday afternoon rain made
fishing mammoth lakes unfishable for my evenings…

upper owens only the jerk baits were getting fish…
spinners-spoons-mini jigs-frogs-bubble flies weren’t
getting hit…no browns…just small rainbows…
although i lost a 18 incher as he kept flying out of the
water till he came unbutton…

convict i rented a yak one day…an also hiked back to
the inlet another…i used the “poor mans” down rigger
(it’s a spring loaded clip that allows any size weight)
‘n’ trolled large jerk baits…score…zipp to 2 beers…

back by the inlet…i tried all the gizmos…but they only
hit the mini jigs…the 1/16th ounce caught the most fish…
i tried different 2” jigs…the sexeee tail shads…tube
baits (trout teasers…sierra slammers…hook up baits)…
they all caught fish…although the pink “n” green mini
shad caught the most fish…

all fish were in the 9 to 18” range… all in all…it was
nice to get away…sure wish stinky was able to have
gone…she loves the sierras…east “n” west…

just keep laughin’…cheers!!!
